Philosophy of Assessment
In order to have a valid educational program in the subject of physical education assessment must be a key component to measure the direction the program is heading, the proficiency of the curriculum, and the advancement of the students in the given subject, just as it is for any other school subject. To obtain these results would allow educators and administrators to understand what important decisions to make and how manipulate a program to obtain the desired outcomes based on the results of the assessments given. For this reason assessment is important in physical education to help the students learn, and to allow programs to thrive and succeed. As for any subject, the goal of assessment in physical education should be to improve the education being offered to the students.
There are many ways to go about testing students in a physical education class, all of which need to be used in order to effectively test all four domains of learning (Health-related physical fitness, psychomotor, cognitive, and affective) because for each domain there are different assessments that work best. Such testing methods include performance based, written, and alternative assessments. In concurrence, many of these testing forms need to not only be standard based assessments if possible, but should also include a form of testing that shows the progress (improvement) each individual is making. It is important to understand that the goal of a physical education teacher is to advance a student as much as possible, and that all students will begin a program at different stages, therefore, only using standards based assessments would not portray a student’s improvement and only using improvement would not demonstrate where a person should be, therefore both should be taken into consideration when evaluating their grade.
